We're all a little bit broken, and mending speaks to instilling value and beauty into imperfect and worn-out things: what better metaphor for taking good care of ourselves and each other?
And so: bring your mending and textile repair projects for some socially productive time! No need to have stitching skills (or even a project of your own...we've got things...).
Tools and supplies (a generous assortment of patch materials, buttons, hooks, thread, needles, scissors, etc.) will be available for use during each event, and we'll also have a specific offering of additional sewing/mending products available for purchase, as noted in each monthly attendance option.
There will be no formal instruction: experimentation and peer-to-peer knowledge sharing are skills worth strengthening, so we'll be figuring things out together, perhaps with help & inspiration from a book or three.
These analog (phones off) events will take place on the second Thursday evening of each month in Stevens Square, beginning in March 2025. While we'll gather outside as weather conditions permit, our default/backup location is a third story walkup. Air quality will be proactively managed (spacious room, open windows, air filtration) and masks are welcomed.
Another note on air quality and community health: given that carbon emissions are heavily front-loaded into the pre-consumer phases of any product's environmental lifecycle, and given that profits for the majority of newly manufactured clothing and household supplies (and so much else already being needlessly churned out and tossed out) are merely enriching those whose wealth has been accumulated at the expense of our collective wellbeing, these classes are facilitated and run using exclusively post-consumer materials and supplies.
Attendees are asked to actively consider the social impact of their travel mode: walk, bike, and public transit are encouraged! Slow living is good for our brains and souls, so allow yourself time for the journey - or allow us to help you get your own events started closer to home. :)
