Which nib?

When you purchase this listing, you'll receive your choice of one (1) new old stock pen nib (options include new old stock writing, drawing & calligraphy nibs: monoline, oblique, fine, thick, + more for hand lettering, messages, art).

Pick a few, or add one or more to our other calligraphy, ink, & snail mail paper listings.

Here are some options for you (see below for descriptions, and photos for amateur writing samples):

1. Kantel no. 920: a crown nib, good for textured papers. Made in Italy.

2. E.S. Perry no. 777 - E F Iridinoid: this is a very fine monoline nib, great for drawing + detail work.

3. Blanzy Poure & Cie de ronde no. 230-1: broad nib, good for italics

4. Massag 521X: left handed nib (oblique)

5. Brause & Iserlohn no. 70 F: high flex, an ideal nib for large lettering

6. Vintage Soviet-era nib, made in the Russian Federation: basic/standard fine point writing nib. Simple, clean, elegant.

While fountain pens tend to get all the attention, we’ve developed a strong preference for dip pens for their versatility (and because they’re not finicky: you can experiment with all manner of writing liquids without clogging/rusting/ruining the pen... India ink? Check. Watercolors? Check. Reconstituted ink crusts, liquid ink jet leftovers, food coloring? Check, check, check!

Our goal in offering a variety of options here is to inspire and support creative reuse of inks, paints, pigments and more... Have you tried making black walnut ink? Written secret messages in lemon juice? No need to be an expert hand letterer to enjoy these beauties: have fun, get creative, and enjoy the process!

  • Shipping

    • 100% secondhand packaging

    • intentionally slow in-house service levels

    • ground shipping only

This is climate-competent commerce, and we talk a bit more about each of these strategies on our 'official' shipping policy page:

    The Fine Print
  • Proactive Satisfaction + Refunds

We have adopted a 'generally generous' approach to fulfilling many of our product listings, as sending a wee bit extra can avoid costly errors & 'fix it' shipments (besides, we find most folks appreciate the occasional freebie).

That said, if you would prefer to avoid the extras, we will gladly rightsize or downsize your order on request (product price would remain the same because more labor + less product = wash). If you prefer this option, please include a detailed order note to specify the quantity you wish to recieve (i.e. 'please send precise count of 7 for XYZ product').

As a rule, we discourage returns - but we also don't abide crappy customer experiences. To initiate issue resolution in the event that we miss the boat with your order (gaps happen!), head to our refund policy page (linked here - and at the bottom of any page) to get started.
